Environmental Commitments
Blommer recognizes that cocoa bean production, processing and chocolate manufacturing activities have an impact on the environment. We are committed to conduct business in an environmentally responsible manner and to provide sound environmental stewardship throughout the value chain by continuously reducing our impacts on air, land and water.
In 2018, the Fuji Oil Group formulated it's Environmental Vision 2030 and committed to:
CO2 Emissions: 40% reduction in absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2, and 18% reduction in absolute Scope 3
Water Usage: 20% reduction per unit of production
Waste: 10% reduction per unit of production
In line with the Environmental Vison 2030, Blommer leads environmental initiatives in our plants in three areas: waste, water and energy.
Carbon Footprint
In line with the Science Based Targets Initiative, our parent company Fuji Oil Holdings has established our Environmental Vision 2030 to reduce absolute Scope 1& 2 emissions by 40% by 2030 (vs. 2016) and absolute Scope 3 emissions by 40% by 2030 (vs. 2016).
Targets adopted by companies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are considered “science-based” if they are in line with what the latest climate science says is necessary to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement – to limit global warming to well-below 2⁰C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit warming to 1.5⁰ C. We are also aligned with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol that establishes a comprehensive global standardized frameworks to measure and manage greenhouse gas emissions.
Blommer is committed to contribute to the Fuji Environmental Vision 2030. To this end, it is critical to increase our use of renewable energy, enhance energy efficiency throughout our facilities and find more environmentally friendly options to harmful ozone depleting substances. At Blommer we are committed to purchase renewable energy above and beyond the state requirements to stay ahead of their Renewable Portfolio Standards strategy and help support the expansion of clean energy production. In 2019, 23% of our electricity supply came from clean energy sources and we are committed to increasing our purchases of renewables year on year to support our Environmental Vision.
It is crucial to consider not only the greenhouse gas emissions from our core operations but also the emissions from our entire supply chain. All the indirect emissions that occur both upstream and downstream of our manufacturing facilities are what we call Scope 3 emissions.
As a food manufacturer we know that the purchase of raw materials make up at least 70% of these Scope 3 emissions. It is critical that we focus on this first. By partnering with our suppliers we are committed to preventing deforestation and improving how food is produced to lower the carbon footprint of the ingredients we source.
